Antiques, Collectibles, Vintage Stores, and “Parklets” in Long Beach, CA

Last weekend, I braved the rain, wind, and cold to explore the Long Beach Antique Flea Market held on the third Sunday of every month at Veterans Stadium. It’s hard to believe it was my first time there, but it will definitely not be my last. I’m planning on going next month, too.  If you enjoy really interesting and unusual items, this is the place! Parking is free, and entrance is $5, but if you look on the website, there are discount coupons available (which means more money to spend!).  The next date is April 15, which I believe would be the perfect antidote to the stress of “tax day”.

4th Street Retro Row

If you simply must have an antique ashtray or mid-century modern coffee table before then, I recommend 4th Street Retro Row (on 4th between Cherry and Junipero). This is one of my favorite places in the city, a street lined with antique and vintage stores, interesting eateries, and the beautiful Art Theater.

There are many events held on 4th Street each month. Here is a list from the 4th Street Long Beach website of this week’s events:

Wednesday – 4th Street Vine is hosting their weekly “Emerging Sounds of Wednesdays” series at 8pm. Savor a glass of wine while enjoying a showcase of local musicians.

Thursday The Art Theater is screening “Can You Feel It”, The Ultimate Music Festival Experience in HD at 9pm.

Friday – The Center is hosting a series of speakers for Women’s History Month, featuring women who are successful in male-dominated careers. This week’s speaker is Patricia “Peanut” Manuel, “2009 USA Boxing National Champion Gold Medalist, 2010 USA Boxing National Championships Silver Medalist, Two-Time Golden Gloves Champion 2006 and 2008, National PAL Champion 2006.” The event begins at 6:30, followed by a light reception.

Saturday – Clutter for a Cause – a rummage sale to benefit The Center LB. From 9am – 2pm. For more information, check The Center LB’s website.

Saturday – Bike Saturdays! This is a weekly event in which participating retailers throughout Long Beach give a discount to those who arrive on bicycle. Click here for a list of participating businesses. On the last Saturday of each month, Bike Mania offers free bike tune-ups from 4-6pm.

Sunday – The Easter Bunny will be available for pictures at Lil Devils Boutique on 4th Street, from Noon – 4pm, each sitting is $5.

What’s a Parklet?

If you attend any of the events on 4th Street this week, you may notice a change on the street. 4th Street has new “parklets” or miniature dining parks in front of a Lola’s and Number Nine. These parklets, which are popular in cities such as San Francisco, are on a deck about the size of two parking spaces, which bump out from the sidewalk into the street. Lola’s Mexican Cuisine has some outdoor seating in the rear, but the new seating provided by the parklets out front is really interesting, and they provide the perfect perch to people watch on a sunny afternoon.

Have a great week!
