Summer Art Festivals In Laguna Beach
Summer Art Festivals In Laguna Beach
Every summer, the Laguna Beach artist community hosts outstanding events highlighting local artists and artisans. Just blocks away from the beautiful Laguna Beach waterfront are two great festivals I recommend you attend at least once this summer.
Festival of Arts Laguna Beach – Pageant of the Masters
Every year we enjoy packing a picnic and visiting the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. There so many wonderful artists to meet, and lots of interesting art on display. Get there in the mid-afternoon and grab a table in the shade, listen to great live music, and enjoy. The 2013 Festival of the Arts season is June 30 until August 24.
“As one of the nation’s oldest and most highly acclaimed juried fine art shows, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts has offered a breathtaking showcase for artists and art lovers for over 80 years. The Festival’s prestigious juried art show includes a wide variety of media such as paintings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, handcrafted wood and furniture, ceramics, glass and more – all by 140 of Orange County’s finest artists. This is the place to find that perfect art treasure for your home or business.
From late June through the end of August, the Festival of Arts opens its doors daily for visitors to not only enjoy the award-winning work of exhibited artists, but also demonstrations and art workshops, daily art tours, live music, special events, on-site restaurants and much more.”
Pageant of the Masters – July 2 – August 31
If you haven’t been to Pageant of the Masters yet, it’s an amazing show that’s an absolute must-see. Each year the Pageant chooses a theme and, with the art of makeup, costuming, and lighting, creates living, breathing, renditions of famous paintings and statues. If you don’t have tickets yet, get them right away, as the weekend shows can sell out quickly.
Tips: The shows start at 8:30, but parking is difficult to find after 5 — so arrive early. You can eat dinner at any of the great restaurants nearby, or even better, pack a picnic and sit outside in the Festival of Arts (season admission is included in your Pageant ticket). Try to get a seat as close to center as possible – although the seats on the side are pretty good. It can get chilly in the outdoor amphitheater after dark, so bring a jacket or stadium blanket, along with a stadium seat cushion. Binoculars make the evening even better, so if you have a set, you may want to bring them. If you don’t have them, they rent them at the amphitheater, along with blankets and chair cushions.
For more information on tickets and dates, see the Pageant of the Masters website.
The Sawdust Festival Summer Show
The Sawdust Festival is hosting its 2013 Summer Festival starting June 28th to September 1st. The festival features over 200 Laguna Beach artists and artisans, exhibiting their fine art and crafts.
From the Sawdust Festival website: “Art enthusiasts, collectors, and novice artists have come to the Sawdust since our beginning in 1966 for our mix of fine art and craft. Media include hand-blown and fused glass, painting, jewelry, surf art, ceramics, clothing and textiles, wood and metal sculpture, scrimshaw, photography, and so much more.”
There are a variety of art classes offered during the summer season, such as oil painting, glass blowing, glass fusing, ceramics, jewelry, and photography. For a detailed schedule, click here. Most classes are only $95, and you have a completed project to take home, wear, or share.
Laguna Beach offers a Passport to the Arts – a season pass to Festival of the Arts, Art-A-Fair, and Sawdust Art Festival (Pageant of the Masters is not included). If you plan on visiting more than once during the season, this may be the “ticket” for you.
Let’s get out there and enjoy all the Laguna art community has to offer!
