High Flying Fun in Long Beach this Weekend!

High flying fun!

The summer is winding down to an end, and Long Beach is celebrating in style as one of five locations holding the first ever National Red Bull Flugtag on Saturday, September 21, 2013. (The other four locations are Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Washington DC, and Chicago)

“East Coast versus West Coast rap. Memphis ribs versus Texas brisket. If there’s one thing America loves, it’s a good ‘ole regional rivalry. So which part of the country will grab top honors at National Red Bull Flugtag 2013? Can Midwestern practicality trump Texas showmanship? Will South Beach flair best the magic of Hollywood? On September 21, all arguments will be settled on the flight deck.”

If you haven’t heard of, or seen Flugtag before, it originally started in Austria in the middle 90’s, eventually hopping the pond to become a newly popular American spectator sport. Flugtag is essentially a competition with teams attempting to fly the wackiest, home-made, human powered flying machine off the end of a pier – and into the ocean. It sort of amounts to watching grown adults shove a float off the end of a 30 foot tall ramp and ride it into the water… or should I say, crash it into the water.

There are a few local Long Beach teams to cheer on, such as Ship Yeah, Ledgendary Flying Machine, and FlyCycle – however there are many west coast teams competing. The winning team for the National Red Bull Flugtag will receive a Sky Diving Trip with the Red Bull Air Force – so this definitely takes a daredevil.

This event is FREE to the public! Hangars open at 10am – and the first flights are at Noon. This is sure to be an exciting event.

Traffic and finding parking in Downtown Long Beach on days with big events can be troublesome at times – we suggest trying public transit. Visit www.metro.net and use their online trip planner. If you live relatively nearby, there will also be dedicated bike parking on Marina Green – close to the corner of Shoreline Drive and Shoreline Village. Visit www.bikelongbeach.org to learn more about bike transportation in Long Beach.
